Accelerated Readers

Laburnum House have been a proud partner of Renaissance Learning for over 15 years. Supplying hundreds of thousands of books to schools all over the UK that are quizzed for Accelerated Reader. Accelerated Reader is an award winning, widely used assessment solution for children of all ages and abilities. Designed to assess children’s reading abilities teachers can then use interventions to help struggling readers and encourage them to read independently. Children choose their own book, from the vast selection of Accelerated Reader quizzed titles available and take a quiz online to show that they have correctly understood the contents of the book. One of the key features of Accelerated Reader titles is that children are guided to books that they will find challenging by their ZPD/ATOS level* but without constricting them to a particular topic, genre or set of characters.

*ZPD is the level at which the child is encouraged to read, the books should be difficult enough to keep them engaged but not so difficult they become frustrated and this is their “Zone Of Proximal Development (ZPD)”

*ATOS is the formula which determines the text complexity, unlike other formulae it takes the text of the entire book rather than just a sample.

LY (Lower Years, ages 5 to 8)
MY (Middle Years, ages 9 to 13)
MY+ (Middle Years Plus, ages 12 and above)
UY (Upper Years, ages 14 and above)
