Accelerated Reader is designed to assess and support children’s reading development across all ages and abilities. Once pupils have completed a reading assessment, they are given a recommended reading range known as their Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). This helps them select books that provide the right level of challenge without causing frustration.
After reading a book, pupils complete an Accelerated Reader quiz, allowing teachers to monitor comprehension, identify areas for support and celebrate reading success.

One of the programme’s greatest strengths is that pupils can choose from thousands of books across a wide range of genres, authors and topics while remaining within their recommended reading level.

ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development) identifies the reading range best suited to a pupil’s current ability. Books within a child’s ZPD are challenging enough to promote progress while remaining accessible and enjoyable.
ATOS is the readability formula used by Accelerated Reader to determine the difficulty level of a book. Unlike many readability measures, ATOS analyses the text of the entire book rather than a sample, helping schools make more accurate reading recommendations.
